The story goes something like this: The chorus was already an established form of theater in ancient Greece when, one day, a member of the chorus, Thespis, stepped away from his fellow performers and began to sing lines by himself. Who knows if Thespis knew what he was doing or not. At any rate, the art of acting was born in that moment. At least that's how the story goes. The chorus commenting on the events and fate of the main characters, and the division between an individual and a group, became a feature of Greek theater that still influences how we tell stories today.
In this series of exercises, we will explore the dichotomy between chorus and hero and how we use it to tell stories. We will study group movement. How do individuals become a group? How does the group dynamically move together? How can we create a group without a leader? How do we keep a band together and what happens when the band breaks up? We will explore the tools offered by physical theater in storytelling: pantomime, characters, and theatrical transposition of space and time. And together we will study classic and modern stories and the themes of individualism and collectivism that are inextricably linked to them.
As usual, with the help of the exercises offered in this topic, we will maintain our physical fitness and acting flexibility, which are prerequisites for conscious use of the body on stage. Therefore, expect sweat, running, laughter, as well as stillness and silence.
