A Workshop on Slapstick with Norman Taylor
Norman Taylor’s passion is analytical movement. One way to approach this is to reference what unites us all: verbs. A verb has no opinion, but when we put a verb into use we each have our way of doing it - our view of the world in fact. Analysis depends on exercises that explore economy of action: the greatest output for the minimum input. And we are all incapable of being efficient and economical in what we do - we each have our own way of doing too much in fact. How can this ‘too much’ be put to use?
Are there gags everywhere? No. And yes.
Are there visual gags everywhere? No. And, of course, yes!
We can observe ourselves cleaning the house and see how we do it. If there is our way there must be another way, maybe more complicated, maybe with an accident, maybe with the result we do not want.
Digging the garden, chopping down a tree, raking the dead leaves… there is always our way of doing it, and then accidents and then gags.
Ah! The logic of the comical!
And the chase scenes and combat. It’s either serious as in James Bond films (they always start with 20 or 25 minutes of chase before they get down to the really boring stuff) or funny.
Are we humans fundamentally serious or ridiculous? In either case we sure do need a sense of humour, that sixth sense that is as essential as the other five. And slapstick comedy is a serious business.
Norman Taylor is widely regarded as one of the finest international ambassadors of the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, he taught alongside Lecoq at the École Lecoq for almost 20 years. He is one of the few remaining first-generation Master Teachers of this school and is an authentic holder of this powerful pedagogic lineage. His speciality is Analysis of Movement and he has taught in over 30 countries at some of the world’s finest theatre conservatories. He is uniquely qualified to train teachers in the movement pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, of which he has an unparalleled understanding.
